Description

While it is possible to walk almost the entire way between Leighton Buzzard and Pitstone along the Grand Union Canal towpath, there are no rest points along the way, apart from Grove Lock pub near the start. The existing route's detour to Slapton seems misjudged given that there is no longer a pub in the village, or any alternative nearby, and the route takes in an unpleasant stretch of the B488 through Horton, which is narrow, busy (though within a 30mph restriction) between tall hedges and with no verges. This alternative is the same length, but using part of the Aylesbury Outer Ring path takes in the hilltop village of Mentmore, whose pub, The Stag, reopens on 21 June 2021, also as a coffee shop from 10am. The route then continues on well-used paths to meet the existing route near Cheddington station. I have also removed what seems an unnecessary detour along Wing Road in Linslade at the start of the route, given that the canal path can easily be picked up from Leighton Road, with ramped access adjacent to the Tesco car park

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.
