Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Worsley’s Slow Ways.

This is a fairly long flat walk from Irlam to Worsley suitable for walkers but due to some sections not so for cyclists Starting at Irlam railway station which is a sight in itself! Like a step back in time to a bygone era of stations and locomotives. The walk takes you towards Irlam town centre before turning left at St Teresa Church onto Astley road. The road continues on over the M62 motorway onwards to farm land for quite a distance. Passing a farm that grows turf onwards along a very straight road which looks maintained privately. At four lane ends there is an interesting farm with various memorabilia and architectural salvage before turning right. The lane continues a long way between farm land until you pass over the M62 towards Manchester City Airport formerly known as Barton airport. The route turns left off the lane onto a path which is overgrown in places near the airport before joining a footpath. Towards Patricroft and alongside the canal before reaching the looplines walk from Monton. This section of the looplines is very pleasant and frequently used by people of all ages. Turning towards Worsley Woods and through past the dam to Mill Brow with its postcard like cottages. You will pass the Delph with it’s interesting history of the Bridgewater canal before ending at St Marks church...

This is a nice easy walk from Tyldesley to Worsley. It’s mostly flat and should suit people of must ages. It also should suit people with pushchairs and bikes and possibly wheelchairs as the route is on mostly firm pathways. Starting in Tyldesley a short walk will take you to a pathway alongside the guided bus route. It’s an easy walk however I would say that this part of the walk is not so interesting depending on who you may meet along the way! Reaching Ellenbrook there is a good Co op should you need refreshments. Leaving Ellenbrook you will cross the road onto a tree lined walkway with leaved canopy. This is a more pleasant section of the walk in my opinion. You will follow looplines signs towards Roe Green along this section. There is a nice coffee shop at Row Green but you will need to walk up steps if you want to call in. So this optional and you can just carry on if you like. Further on you will reach the bridges at the M60 and you should turn right towards Worsley woods. Again a pleasant section of the walk ultimately taking you to Worsley roundabout and St Marks church where the route finishes. I would say that the route should be reasonably safe during the day as it seems well used by locals....

This is a lovely walk from Worsley to Urmston. Starting at St Marks Church a short walk takes you to The Delph at Worsley. The heart of the Bridgewater canal with unusual modern sculpture and a huge amount of history of the underground mining operation with the canal being the primary transport for the operation. A short walk takes you to Mill Brow with its picturesque cottages and onto Worsley woods. Through the woods is very nice and leads to the looplines walk to Monton passing what looks like an old abandoned train station. Monton has a range of shops and cafes if you’re in need of a refreshment as I was on a hot day. Crossing the bridge to the Waterside Inn the pathway takes you along the former towpath towards Patricroft and on to wards Barton swing bridge. An incredible feat of engineering taking the bridgewater canal over the Manchester ship canal. Amazing! Onwards there is an impressive church before returning to the towpath alongside the Bridgewater canal. Some distance on you will turn off the towpath at the Kellogg’s factory. The route is mainly footpaths from then on. Not as picturesque but level decent pavements, some tree lined onto Urmston train station...

The route is good to walk or run. There is a small part of the walk where the path goes through Worsley woods and is mainly earth/mud, so bear in mind what time of year it is. There are a few sets of steep steps on the route but once through the woods you get on to the loop line which takes you through Roe Green and then on to Walkden the loop line is a well formed path. The walk ends at Walkden train station This route is not suited for a wheel chair due to the steps which get you on to the loop line. The route seems reasonably safe and there are numerous people on the loop line walking. The route is accurate...

Overall I think it’s a good place for people who enjoy walking and jogging. It’s busy and everyone friendly that passes by and it feels a safe place you can also walk down past the motorway and can listen to the cars. The walk leads you to the train station which you then can get a train it’s a great location....

The route starts at St Marks Church, which is situated on a busy road, but traffic becomes much less after crossing a nearby roundabout....

I chose this route as I wanted a more direct route to Worsley, and given a period of very wet weather I wanted to avoid some very muddy footpaths included in Walwor one....
