Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Urmston’s Slow Ways.

This route was super easy to follow and a safer alternative than the main roads. It’s not too long and passes a few shops and cafes in the way. I would definitely do this route again....

This is a lovely walk from Worsley to Urmston. Starting at St Marks Church a short walk takes you to The Delph at Worsley. The heart of the Bridgewater canal with unusual modern sculpture and a huge amount of history of the underground mining operation with the canal being the primary transport for the operation. A short walk takes you to Mill Brow with its picturesque cottages and onto Worsley woods. Through the woods is very nice and leads to the looplines walk to Monton passing what looks like an old abandoned train station. Monton has a range of shops and cafes if you’re in need of a refreshment as I was on a hot day. Crossing the bridge to the Waterside Inn the pathway takes you along the former towpath towards Patricroft and on to wards Barton swing bridge. An incredible feat of engineering taking the bridgewater canal over the Manchester ship canal. Amazing! Onwards there is an impressive church before returning to the towpath alongside the Bridgewater canal. Some distance on you will turn off the towpath at the Kellogg’s factory. The route is mainly footpaths from then on. Not as picturesque but level decent pavements, some tree lined onto Urmston train station...

t was a good walk, I had no idea how easy it was to get from Urmston to Sale in this amount of time by walking. The church on the way was beautiful but we had to go through some roads that spoiled the walk a little....

A very nice and relaxing walk. Passes a nice horse paddock and golf courses, the pathways are clearly layed out and accessible. I would walk this route again for sure!...

Not a bad little walk. Partly country side and partly town centre. Easily accessible from Urmston station then some road and streets mostly flat with access ramps for wheelchairs. Opens up to countryside after a short while with equestrian facilities and horse shop! Leads to interesting walks in tree lined pathways. Mostly flat for bikes and pushchairs to access too. Passes by a weir which is nice with water flowing and a steel bridge walkway over. The bridge has a small ramp to access it. You would also later pass a quaint old village church on a cobblestone street which is worth a photo or selfie or two. Later in the walk you will reach Sale town centre which is great to stop at for a coffee and snack or a meal if you like. Sale train station is then easily accessible for your return journey or onward travel. I would say this should be a safe day route to take and would recommend...

Crossing Park Road into Stretford is not straight forward; no crossings, and no ramps (fencing also hampers progress in places)....

From Irlam station, we have a choice: following the pavement down to the main road; or along a stone and earth footpath through Station Park and its history and art installations, although this does involve steps. After a couple of turns, we join another footpath: an unpaved track running to a farm; a turning onto a earth (and mud) path; then, once through a gate, across a field and onto a long footpath running alongside the railway embankment. A few turns, and down a back alley, we cross the road and join an earth footpath running past Flixton station....

Unfortunately not possible in its current state; the former track that runs alongside the Manchester Ship Canal and the railway is no longer accessible from Irlam Lock, and apparently hasn't for a year or two. There's a fence and a locked gate next to a new generator building, so it may never open again....

Leaving Urmston, the route passes a horse paddock and takes in some countryside before emerging into Ashton-on-Mersey and a suburban walk to Sale, where you will find a lovely town centre....

Some access issues due to occasional lack of dropped kerbs, but overall the route is direct, safe and easy to follow. Slight detour takes you to the lovely Victoria Park if you follow School Road instead of Jackson Street....

A slight alternative which involves walking along the river is to turn right off Ashton Lane onto park Rd, left at the end onto Glebelands Rd and right to Little Ees Lane. Then walk along the rive to the footbridge mentioned in the description. Both good routes just slightly different....
