Help connect Twickenham

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Twickenham’s Slow Ways.

Then a few more residential roads (photo #3, #4) to end up on Twickenham Bridge (photo #5, #7) to cross the Thames (photo #6)....

On the east side (photo #8), after crossing Houndslow Road, the route as drawn, will want you to do down a side road with cottages, and then north on Mount Road to Hampton Road West. You need to go north along Houndslow Road, and then ideally use the signalled crossing to get to the north side of Hampton Road West. If I would were to draw this route myself, I would have looped back to the river after crossing the bridge going north, to continue along the river. The rest of the route is mainly through Crane Park, and along the river (photo #14, #15)....

Make sure you take a look at Turners house on the way past Sandycoombe Road in St Margarets. Also take the cut across Moormead and Bandy Recreation Ground and the river side walk for a better experience on approach to Twickenham Station (closed after sunset)...

Walk this route

A pleasant walk, especially through the back streets of Richmond....

To avoid crossing the Great Chertsey Road you can follow the river under two bridges then turn right and back to go along the cycle track next to the main road. The nearest toilets at Sunbury Cross are in Tesco Extra (900 metres), although you pass the Hare and Hounds pub in Vicarage Road....

The only busy road is on Twickenham Bridge, but the pavements are wide, there are views across the Thames and the bridge architecture is interesting, and on this hot day the breeze was welcome....

There is then a mix of suburban roads and alleyways past Hounslow Station, past the shopping precinct to Hounslow Central station....

The first half is alongside the Thames with lovely views, popular with racing sculls, walkers and cyclists, and today, runners doing the Kingston 10K. There are two unnecessary, but very welcome, wiggles in the route which take you away from the road and back to the Thames for all too brief moments; Radnor Gardens and by Diamonds Jubilee Gardens....

Strider

Walk this route

Mostly roadside walking with a couple of parks, but this well plotted route picks up lots of interesting places....

I know most of this route well, especially the river Crane part; and also the Sunbury end for access to the occasionally open Kempton Steam Museum. The route goes through mostly green spaces and some residential streets, until the final mile or so approaching Sunbury, where it is accompanied by the A316 ‘Country Way’ (a joke surely?), a dual carriageway which is the main feeder for the M3, which starts at Sunbury....

There is one footbridge over the railway at Hounslow but this can be avoided by using Maswell Park Road rather than Ivy Road and cross the railway on the Whitton Road....

With no bridge across the Thames at Twickenham, and no riverside path, there is little option than to walk along the A310 as far as Teddington Lock, with only small diversions....

The route line has a random unsafe road crossing at Twickenham station, take care to cross at a safe crossing point Accessibility: There are two bridges with steps, otherwise paths are good, and apart from the crossing at Twickenham station, all other road crossings are safe....

This is a really nice route BUT there are one or two places where road crossings have not been well drawn, in particular crossing the A305 Richmond Road, which isn't safe at all. I have redrawn the route as Twiric 3, with accurate road crossings, please do use it, I will!!...

where the route crosses the A3004 St Margarets Road at St Margarets. I made a round trip to Twickenham and back from Richmond using Twiric 3 on the way out and Twiric 2 (this route) on the way back! This route (Twiric 2) is 200 metres more direct than Twiric 3 - it achieves this by crossing the Thames on the busy A316 Twickenham Bridge, rather than using Richmond Bridge (which is also busy in a different slow-moving urban traffic sort of way). There is an unsafe crossing where the route crosses the A3004 St Margarets Road at St Margarets....

The busy road leading to Richmond Bridge has lots of local cafes and shops. Across the bridge the route avoids most of the main Richmond shopping street, and instead goes past the bus station, then through the churchyard with magnificent 18th century tombstones....

Very pleasant walk along riverside path, across open park land although the Sunbury end is mainly on a pavement next to a road. This is one kissing gate however this does have a reasonable space for a push chair. Mainly on paved or well maintained gravel paths....
