Help connect Stoneleigh

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Stoneleigh’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route

Starting in Stoneleigh where you cross the medieval stone bridge over the River Sowe (photo 1), the next mile of this route is along the busy Coventry Road where you should take care. Eventually, you reach the red sandstone Cloud Bridge which has no pedestrian path (photo 2) as it crosses the River Avon which becomes a feature of the route from here. Immediately after the bridge, the route finally leaves the road as it finds it's first footpath (photo 3). Eventually you reach the village of Wolston where the route takes you past a war memorial and old Post Office (photo 7). The route here takes you via a raised footbridge which hints at the floods which can occur at this location, before crossing the old bridge over the Avon. You then eventually pass over the Avon again (photo 13), before passing under the Trent Valley section of the West Coast Main Line on your way to St Botulph's church (photo 14) in Newbold on Avon. At Newbold, the route takes you past yet another pub (Barley Mow) as you approach the Oxford Canal. The route then takes you over the old Black Path footbridge (photo 15) as you finally reach your destination in the centre of Rugby....

Good route following the Coventry Way for the whole journey so well sign posted. Have walked a number of times. A few changes coming out of Ryton due to new warehouses but signposted....

The walk (in the direction we travelled) follows the river up to Baginton, past the remains of Bagot's Castle (if the site is open there's a loo and a cafe) and through the churchyard which contains Polish war graves. We took a shortcut along the A46 (beside the allotments, not along the road!) to the new bridge, which is already graffittied. The walk into the city centre becomes more residential as you approach, although there is welcome relief through London Road Cemetary (also worth an explore in it's own right)...

There are places to stop for food/drink along the route - Brinklow has pubs and shops (and a nice chippy), Wolston, Ryton, Bubbenhall have pubs and/or shops and there is a lavender farm just outside Bubbenhall that has a cafe which appears to be open Friday/Saturday (at time of writing)...

The signage gets a bit unclear travelling through the golf course, but at least there was no golf being played when I went through....

Walk this route

The route as it is actually mapped here, is now impossible to do. This is mainly due to the route of HS2 cutting across the walk near Cubbington Wood. Also, the diagonal path shown in this route in the adjacent field towards the flats at Lillington was not present when I did this walk. The walk from Black Lane could take a much better route through Newbold Comyn. Instead, the suggested route takes you alongside the BMX track which is an unusual choice, and then the path alongside St Pauls school in Leamington also required considerable effort to get down as this is also ridiculously overgrown....

Considering this walk starts in a fairly big city, the walk is pleasant walking alongside an old graveyard, open common land and some pleasant areas....

Would be a challenge for wheels due to obstacles and some heavy vegetation on some stretches....

Walk this route

This is a lovely route, going through Leamington's parks before heading out towards the more rural second half. Most of the walk between Cubbington and Stoneleigh is wonderfully remote and quiet, but unfortunately this did mean there were a few small sections where the path was really overgrown (walked in August) with lots of nettles and brambles. Worth it though!...

Walk this route

Some lovely stretches through farmland and fields, but mostly road walking as you leave Kenilworth and an unpleasant stretch of the busy Stoneleigh Road (some of it walking on a grass verge) once you've crossed over the A46. The golf course was pleasant enough to walk through, but can be busy with balls whizzing around you....

The path is well marked and even has warning about which way to look for incoming golf balls when acrossing the golf course. Too much road to recomend on it's own but good as part of Leamington-Kenilworth-Stoneleigh loop....

One of the best slowway routes I walked paths clear marked and easy to walk. one or two sections was a little muddy did just walk this after it rained so that was expected....

Pleasant walk, especially enjoyed the bits before during and immediately after the golf course. Would have given 5 stars if not for slightly nerve-wracking section on path next to very busy road....

Walk this route

On the Stoneleigh side, there are a about a dozen kissing gates, as well as steps and low barriers which could make cycling the route or using a pushchair etc difficult at best, but otherwise not a problem. The photos show the typical footpaths, kissing gates and bridges near Stoneleigh, the missing footbridge at the roundabout, and some of the route toward Coventry....
