This is a pleasant canal walk between two stations on the Manchester to Huddersfield railway line....

A pleasant walk mainly along the towpath by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on the edge of the Peak District. Very tranquil on a winters afternoon. A long tunnel - take a torch!...

The walk - mainly along the canal towpath - was a good alternative to walking along roads....
DerbyshireBBguide
The towpath is not as accessible as some - narrow in places (particularly under bridges) and some steps. Access to the towpath from the B6170 at the Ashton end can be easily missed....

This route was basically a nice walk along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, and included several locks, a pylon astride the canal, some interesting canal and industrial relics, and most excitingly, a canal tunnel to negotiate!...

It is fine, and encouraged, to review your own routes, and you’ll be able to get this one a snail, when my friend has also reviewed it! We walked this on a dull day towards the end of a wet winter, and although there were some puddles, it was not muddy....

As this one stands, it's still got quite a lot of suburban pavement, but Cheetham Park and Hyde Park make very nice diversions and the section past Hough Hill has quite broad views (or it did in January, I think if the trees are in leaf you'd just see the trees)....

RGW added Ashsta two, a new walk from Ashton-under-Lyne to Stalybridge
Walk this routeThis route is fine, it consists mainly of on-road walking along quiet residential streets with a pleasant section through the edge of a park. There is an alternative off-road route utilising the Ashton canal tow path....
RGW
The initial climb out of Stalybridge is a bit of a slog - it's a pavement beside a quiet residential road, then a turn onto a 'restricted byway' which is steeper. Additionally when I did this route, it had rained heavily the day before and one path section in the Stalyhill area was just a stream of running water....

Easy pavement walking, except on Currier Lane where cobblestones may be a problem for wheelchairs or prams. Going through Stamford Park was a nice idea....

The route is relatively easy to follow, although we did get a bit lost on the way up to Luzley Road....
