Help connect Scarborough

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Scarborough’s Slow Ways.

This is a fairly straightforward walk which partly follows the Cleveland Way/England Coast Path, and partly the Cinder Track - the former railway line between Scarborough and Whitby. Before Long Nab, the Slow Ways route then tuns inland along a paved path (signposted to Burniston) to Field Lane, and then along The Cinder Track, skirting Burniston, to Cloughton....

Secondly, after walking up from Cayton Bay towards Osgodby the Cleveland Way (and Slow Ways route) turns right down a long set of steps, only to climb steeply up again after a few hundred yards. In order to avoid this unnecessary descent and ascent, continue straight on at the path junction to Osgodby Hill, and turn right along the now disused road until the Cleveland Way rejoins from the right just as you reach the houses....

Walk this route

This is a very straightforward route which is excellent for those who are not able to walk between Scarborough and Cloughton using the Cleveland Way which has some steep steps and therefore not easy for those who are less than steady on their feet. This is a route used by cyclists who sometimes pass a walker at speed which is rather unnerving. Unlike the Cleveland Way route, there are no sea views....

Walk this route

I walked this from south to north, to the point where the publicised route leaves the coast. It is part of the Cleveland Way along the coast and well signposted but fairly muddy in places. I walked as a single female and it felt safe....

The only potentially difficult crossing is at the top of Stepney Hill, opposite the Jacob's Mount caravan park. In addition there are two flights of concrete steps, the first down through the wood after skirting the Jacob's Mount caravan park and the second through Falsgrave Park. In addition there is a high water marker which is itself strikingly high up, and just below the allotments and before the path leading to the reservoir and Falsgrave Park, a blue plaque marks a house used as a wireless station during WWII, working closely with Bletchley Park....

Walk this route

It's an old railway track so it doesn't have any really steep parts but it isn't flat and it is rough in places. It's popular with walkers, dog walker and cyclists but its a good track and I had no problems....

From Holbeck car park go up a little on sea cliff rd and take in pleasant quiet streets and architecture of Ramshill / South Cliff to slowly descend to the Valley Bridge and rail station.....
