Help connect Lymm

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lymm’s Slow Ways.

Access to the canal is inaccurately plotted, but was not too difficult to find on the ground. Where the TPT was close to the Bridgewater Canal we could see another small aqueduct over a road. We stayed close to the ship canal until reaching the road swing bridge, where we had previously been held up on our bus journey as a ship passed through....

The pavement into Lymm continued to be quite narrow, and the roads here and earlier were surprisingly busy....

I walked from Northwich train station to Marbury Country Hall, the paths were wide and very well-maintained. There were a few staircases but overall, it was quite accessible. I would recommend this walk!...

Muddy in places, but it is a good walk. Good shops and both ends, with the odd one along the way, and with good transport links, this is a good route, albeit mostly only good for walkers....

Walk this route

The route advises us to follow this to the end, but the tarmacced old railway path, part of the Transpennine Trail, is accessible on the left and too good to ignore! A good link route rather than a route to be walked on its own, this is almost fully accessible, were it not for the narrow pavements at the start, and the muddy footpath alongside the old railway....

This is a good route that travels across Tatton Park, through Rostherne, a lovely village, along quiet lanes and countryside into Lymm village....

Thus route involves walking along busy roads to reach the Bridgewater canal. The route is then direct along the canal towpath to Lymm. I would not walk this route to join the canal towards Lymm....

Walk this route

This route is good for cycling, however there are better ways to travel to Lymm than following this route. It involves walking on fairly busy roads to get to the start of the TPT in Altrincham and exits the TPT too early in Lymm. The TPT is not (as a previous reviewer stated) primarily for cycling- its for mixed use - walkers/cyclists/families with pushchairs etc....

Walk this route

If intended for cyclists then it is unsuited as this section of the canal is a no cycling zone....

This slow way involves a fair amount of road walking although there is no alternative to this due to a lack of rights of way between Warburton and Lymm...

The Transpennine Trail is a long distance cycle route developed by Sustrans, and is primarily intended for cyclists (disregard the previous comment above), however walkers are also encouraged to use it, providing they are conscientious of and respectful to cyclists. The path can get very muddy in places, especially in winter and it is crossed by several (non-major) roads. All in all its a pretty safe, direct and easy route to use....
