There is no verge, so you have to walk on the lane, and although there is good visibility, it is busier than I'd like for a walk. Then the lane joins the Ash-Tintinhull Road which is unpleasant to walk on. There is a verge, but it's not nice to walk on, and the road is busier than the lane. Although there are some really nice parts of this walk, the road walking spoils it for me....

There is a footpath across a field with no visible path and crops. The section around Knole Hill was a bit mucky, and the route around the golf club uses a new Permissive path as the original footpath didn't look usable....

Update - I tried the route again April 2023 and made it all the way. There is a section of road walking that doesn't have a path, but the road was fairly quiet when I went, so I felt safe enough...

I walked from Ilchester to Yeovil and enjoyed either end more than the middle third where the path maintenance is not too hot. If the poor paths across the middle of the route hadn't annoyed me so much, this would be a 4 star walk, but as it is today, it's just a 3....

Walk this routeThis is a pleasant easy and level route, and very similar.to Somilc one, but with a slight deviation following the country lane into Knole, (avoiding having to swim across the millpond which doesn’t show on OS Explorer!) and a more accurate tracking of the path across the field just before Knole. The middle half of the route is very pretty and quiet before the rumble of the main A303 kicks in as you get nearer to Ilminster....
A revised route map will be posted ASAP to avoid these issues....
A pleasant level route except the middle third was difficult to follow as the path disappeared completely into a mill-pond, one gate was misplaced, there was an un-signposted section that would have taken us through a field of heifers and we had to scramble over some heaps of hard-core and rubble blocking the path. However we worked around these problems without too much difficulty. I’ll suggest the re-route we did as a variation....
As I was on a deadline, I did change the route slightly to give a more direct path where it was clear the planned route was unnecessarily diverting from the quickest route....
