Help connect Greenhithe

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Greenhithe’s Slow Ways.

Highlights of the day: Views from the highest parts of the B255 (photo 1), Beacon Woods Country Park where I didn't see signs of hazel dormice but did find reindeer lichens (photos 2-4), early spring blossom and lambs, the views coming down toward Betsham (photos 5, 6), a sine-wave brick wall in Betsham (photo 7), human faces on oast windvanes in Southfleet (local celebrities?), cowslips, wood anemones, butchers broom and bluebells hidden in a boundary woodland strip, skylarks and long views from The Gallops above Longfield (photo 14) although it wasn't clear enough to see the towers of Central London this time....

This route has some 5 stars parts, others that only just rate 3 for functional but not pleasant. The three blocked parts (see attached map) look plausible in theory but the maps are out of date and/or misleading. 1) A lane/permissive cycleway near the B255 Bluewater turn off has been closed since 2020 according to a dilapidated sign. OS and OSM both out of date). There's a less pleasant but easy alternative alongside the B255. 2) Just as you come into Southfleet the route goes into a large industrialised farm yard not far from St Nicholas Church. OSM is misleading and is missing several public footpaths). I didn't actually try walking through as locals showed me a better way along a public footpath but the exit onto Hook Green Road is on Google Street View and obviously private. 3) Just as you leave Southfleet the route deviates from Hook Green Rd for a while, going through another commercial farmyard, Hook Green Farm. The route is walkable otherwise, but could be better. In Southfleet I didn't test the part of the route east of Hook Green Road where it wiggles around....

Walk this route

It was quick to get off-road onto a shared cycle way, with a hundred metres or so on a cul-de-sac then a stretch on a back lane /alley next to the rail tracks, all very peaceful given the proximity of the busy A206. I didn't retest the residential roads between Cotton Lane (near London Rd) to Dartford station....
