Help connect Filton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Filton’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
This has now been removed, after a change in the network, with Aust being added as a Slow Ways place. I walked Filton to Aust. Once through Catbrain, then around the edge of the monster Cribb's Causeway shopping centre and across the main road, it is all change as the Slow Way heads down into the Severn Vale. Approaching Aust, the Slow Way goes through a new wetland which has been created as part of major flood defence works along the River Severn....

The Concord Way between Constable Road and Bennington Way is closed off while development work goes on...

This section of the route was very pleasant and easy to follow....

Going north … the section from Ashley Hill towards the allotments is not cyclable and would be a challenge in a wheelchair. At the moment (2023-24) it then diverts under the railway and up Boiling Wells Lane to Muller Road. Many cyclists have to walk the last section; I imagine it would be impossible in a wheelchair....

I undertook this route, together with Filton to Bristol. It is a route between one urban node and another. There is very little to be said other than it is an acceptable route to get from a to b...

The second diversion from Station Rd, involved a reasonably steep ascent up to Ashley Down Rd, and a very steep descent down to Mina Rd, where it rejoins the official route...

As a result c15% of the route can’t be walked. An alternative route on Ashley Down Road was found. The route is mostly through built up areas and easy to follow....

Since March 2023 the Concorde Way cycle path has been closed (it is expected to be closed for at least a year). As a result about 10% of the route can’t be walked and a diversion around Ashley Down Road had to be made. The route itself is very accessible for wheels and on footpaths so very little mud....

I found it relatively easy to use paved road options to the west side of the route, which run in the same north-south direction as the plotted route. I found the route easy to follow and safe....
Tim Ryan
Overall this is a good route but the current development work between the stoke gifford bypass and M32 means a diversion into Hambrook lane and then along the bypass rather than directly across that area....

Heading north of hatchet Road following the Brook and the nature reserve has sections not suitable for wheels and in winter or after periods of rain can get very muddy so trail shoes or walking boots would be required....

However, traffic free section between Lockleaze Road and Bonington walk currently closed....
Hilary Cooling
Major construction work is happening in the field after the M32 and there is a poorly signed detour around the site....

This Slow Way is a right old mixture, routing variously via the modern development around the Portishead marina; a bit of Severn Estuary coast; a wetland nature reserve; some semi-rural roadside; a cycle path snaking around the course of a disused railway and vast car parks used to house vehicles imported through Bristol docks; the M5 motorway bridge over the River Avon; a wooded limestone ridge through the suburb of Shirehampton; remnant estate parklands; plus a couple of golf courses and the Southmead housing estate....

Streams and grown-out hedges are still present beside some of the roads and the route makes good use of these more spacious, greener-edged thoroughfares as well as a couple of footpaths through pockets of woodland. There are no barriers but in mid January, the suggested route south of the brook through Three Brooks nature reserve, near the Bradley Stoke end (roughly what3words ended.wings.vocal to rabble.filled.potato), was pretty muddy underfoot and no good for wheels or light footwear, while the metal bridge across the stream at the eastern was very narrow, so I suggest wheelers and the less well shod use the surfaced path on the north side instead....

Note that you can follow the signed Concorde Way cycle path between Muller Road and the bottom of Dovercourt Road (it goes along Petherbridge Way past Aldi and over the footbridge - what3words pushes.others.fence to hints.often.noses) instead of using the rather cage-like narrow path around the back of Lidl. Its nicer....

And also to note for the time being - not sure how long for - the section of cycleway between Constable Road and Bonnington walk in Lockleaze is closed while houses are being built adjacent to it, so there is a diversion up a neighbouring road which makes it a less pleasurable (but still direct) ride here....

Some of the paths have motorcycle gates on them, which may restrict wheelchair access. I attach a photo taken at Millennium Green in Northville....
conoroneilluk
Straightforward and accessible urban route, making the most of local green spaces....

Pleasant route but currently diverted midway due to large housing development. Areas of the route narrow and slightly overgrown when walked in late May....

Inevitably much is along busy roads, but always on pavements with crossings. Nice bit through a nature reserve....
