Help connect Burnley

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Burnley’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route on a day of sunshine and sudden showers, with lots of rainbows, so it was pretty, and muddy, and I got wet! After crossing the river bridge the path through the woods was a bit muddy with lots of roots, almost making a staircase at one point....

This stretch of the walk is straight with Townley Hall on the left hand side and local park accessories such as an ice cream van and a children's’ playground....

Leaving Burnley Central (previously Burnley Bank Top) the path winds through Brun Valley Park with the River Brun adjacent (not surprisingly). A pleasing and easy walk with evidence of industrial heritage - a weir, for example. After 1.5 miles the route turns right towards Rowley Lake through several fields and attractive views towards Brierfield and Pendle Hill are in evidence....

Eventually we left the park and crossed the road, via a pelican crossing, and headed along a straight, commercial then residential road. Access to the towpath was via a slightly steep slope on the north side of the road, after crossing the bridge. After the embankment, the route continued on the towpath right round to the far side of Thompson Park, and up a slope into Thursby Gardens and on to the station. I think this could have been shortened by entering Thompson Park earlier from the towpath....

From Rowley Farm the route crossed farmland with several gates, kissing gates and stiles, and a few docile cows....

The parts through the fields are great but there are some stiles that are in poor condition near Rowley Farm. The walk a long the river is very relaxed and was well used....

Walk this route

The mainly canal towpath route encounters the railway and the M65 motorway several times. Soon after returning to the towpath, there is an aqueduct over the motorway, and the route leaves the canal here, along a well-trodden, but unsignposted path, through some woods....

Walk this route

The route leaves Burnley Central Station (which is a lot smaller than it sounds!) via a set of cycle tracks to arrive at the canal towpath. The vast bulk of the route is a pleasant walk along the towpath, which feels surprisingly rural, apart from a bit of noise from the M65....
