Help connect Burnham-on-Sea

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Burnham-on-Sea’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

I can see no sense in walking along boring roads at the start when it is possible to follow the coast path along the estuary and beach. If you want a more direct route, you can follow one of the other options inland. Can this route be amended?...

I've just finished walking this route and really enjoyed it....

I 100% recommend this route for walkers, but there are gates and pinch points that will make it hard for wheelers....

The walk across the Levels between Blackford, Mark and Watchfield via pastures, green droves and quiet lanes is really nice and the final stretch west of Highbridge to the mouth of the River Brue and on up the coast to Burnham sea front is lovely. The poorest section of the route is between Watchfield and Highbridge. One place I found awkward is in a corner of the field west of the motorway underpass beside the River Brue (w3w breached.products.clothed) where the path goes down a slightly nettle-y, brambly slope to another sheep hurdle which is replacing a stile (it was marked with a footpath sign though, at least in the west-going direction)....

The Slow Way takes the easiest and most efficient route over this hill but if you have the energy for the climb as well as a twelve mile walk, I recommend taking the path right over the top of the knoll between Brent Knoll village and East Brent for the big view from the top. After East Brent, the route takes minor roads for much of the next five miles, partly because there are a lot of ageing and unsafe bridges across rhynes in the area which have resulted in temporary footpath closures, so at Edingworth, you gave to walk around a little loop of road instead of taking the quick route across fields and Crab Hole cannot currently be reached on the obvious footpath over the motorway, necessitating an extra stretch of road walk through Loxton....

Walk this route

A good Slow Way which routes partly along the banks of the atmospherically muddy and reedy River Parrett, and has a section heading into Burnham that offers wide views out over Bridgwater Bay. They are safe, quiet lanes which sometimes have views around, but it is not as good as walking up the scenic river wall of the Parrett Estuary....

It exits the curious old Dutch-referenced Bridgwater Quay using a cycle path and footpath along the quieter west bank of the reedy river as far as the main road bridge where it swaps to a newly upgraded paved multiuser path on the east bank. The route continues along the river wall for a while longer (with lots of gates to open and shut) before turning off it at Brickyard Farm, where it heads uphill towards Pawlett, and skirts the village using quiet lanes and a pleasant bridleway before regaining the coast path further up via a footpath across some fields. The next few miles up to Burnham is a lovely walk along the sea wall using the England Coast Path, with expansive views across the Parrett Estuary and out into Bridgwater Bay, with a kink in to the edge of Highbridge to get across the mouth of the River Brue over the sluice gate....

A tour of faded victoriana and seaside nature. Actually rather lovely especially near to Uphill....

Walk this route

Basically a great coastal route, much of it using cycle route 33 and a lot of it along beaches. The route is bookended by the two seafront promenades of Burnham and Weston, which provide all the usual seaside facilities and will be busy busy busy if it is a sunny weekend or the school holidays. The second is that the southern end of the mapped route bafflingly eschews the stretch of cycle route 33 and England Coast Path along the sands between Berrow and Burnham, instead offering a boring, trafficky 2km trek along the main road through suburbs and a path across the golf course....

Walk this route

Great walk following the cycle route 33 taking in wetlands, beaches and sites of historical and natural interest. Relatively flat route with lots of picturesque stopping points....
