Help connect Bridport

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Bridport’s Slow Ways.

Walked 30/08/2023 and there were some paths completely overgrown but with a walking app it was easy to take a short detour. The sections on roads were quiet and interesting to walk through the villages....

Walk this route

It started off well on footpaths and quiet lanes through peaceful countryside, but after crossing Barrowland Lane heading for Barrowland Farm I found the walk unpleasant until Whetley. Leaving the farm buildings the route deviates from the footpath, but follow the path (using gps) or you will get stuck. If I were to do this route again, I would try to plot a route that avoided Barrowland Farm and Powerstock Common....

Walk this route

A mix of open fields, country lanes, tracks covered by trees, bridleways. Relatively easy walking with only minor climbing. Plenty of places to eat and drink at both the beginning and the end....

I really like this area of Dorset, the countryside is beautiful and it is usually peaceful, even in the height of summer when the coast is heaving....

Fine views are available from time to time but overall a poor route...

Walk this route

This is a great walk, but I dropped it to 4 stars just because there are some short sections where the paths are not maintained, so are difficult to walk on, and in some cases they are hard to find. The walk down in to Lyme Regis is brilliant, the famous Cobb, the town and sea are all suddenly revealed and you head towards them....

The most difficult section when I walked was between the fish farm and Lower Sturthill, so overgrown that I wasn't entirely sure where the path was....

There are a lot of gates on this walk, many of them large field gates as it is a bridleway, as well as small gates and a few stiles on footpath sections. Not too much road....

Very nice walk, fairly direct and well maintained route (only a couple of non-obvious boundary crossings, at least going in the Bridport to Axminster direction)...
