Latest Updates

It was all fine with easy road crossings in Ashton, past the market and shops, and entering the riverside path via a decent sized gap....

It includes a substantial section of walking along suburban roads and a couple of sections in fields which were muddy and slippy. I'm not convinced that anyone will ever really want to walk between these two places but should they do, my preference would be to use faiash three which removes most of the road walking for only a marginal increase in distance....

Apart from short sections at each end it is almost entirely off-road following a 'green-way' cycle and walking path along the line of the former Ashton to Oldham railway....

This route is unfortunately blocked by the closure of a footbridge over the river Medlock in Brookdale golf club. Two alternative routes have been added - one is this route with the necessary diversion, a second is a slightly longer version which removes much of the road-walking....

Walk this route

The lovely Portland Basin, with its historic narrow boats, was accessed via steps and a footbridge, and then the route used a cobbled footbridge over the start of the Peak Forest Canal at its junction with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Ashton Canal....

Walk this route

The only difficult bit was just south of the masts from SJ 91451 98385 to SJ 91643 98346 at the south end of Ashton Moss, where the narrow path was muddy and had brambles which could become a problem in summer. When I reached the final section of busy roads into Ashton, the suggested way of making the diagonal crossing at Ashton West tram stop, was the less safe way....

A small diversion to the The Hartshead Inn was well worth it - the food was excellent - before descending quite steeply into Mossley....

The walk - mainly along the canal towpath - was a good alternative to walking along roads....

DerbyshireBBguide

Walk this route

The towpath is not as accessible as some - narrow in places (particularly under bridges) and some steps. Access to the towpath from the B6170 at the Ashton end can be easily missed....

Walk this route

After passing some new housing along a gravel path, we reached some woods, then a set of shallow steps took us up to the good path that runs around Knotts Hill Nature Reserve and reservoir. Back on the field path we had good views of Hartshead Pike, and back to the centre of Manchester. The views down into Mossley were lovely, but the steep path down was a bit muddy and slippy, and could be a bit overgrown in summer, but it looked well used....

It is fine, and encouraged, to review your own routes, and you’ll be able to get this one a snail, when my friend has also reviewed it! We walked this on a dull day towards the end of a wet winter, and although there were some puddles, it was not muddy....

This route is fine, it consists mainly of on-road walking along quiet residential streets with a pleasant section through the edge of a park. There is an alternative off-road route utilising the Ashton canal tow path....

Whilst there were no significant problems, I did not particularly enjoy walking this route and suspect a more pleasant alternative is available following the Ashton canal tow path....

RGW

Walk this route

A safe and sensible city route, incorporating a surprising little bit of path by the Tame which is especially pretty just now as the hawthorn is in bloom. Roads are crossed safely at pedestrian lights, and at the Ashton end there's the nice bonus of the market, if it's market day....

Easy pavement walking, except on Currier Lane where cobblestones may be a problem for wheelchairs or prams. Going through Stamford Park was a nice idea....
