25 May 2024 (edited 26 May 2024)Neither of the possible routes had been reviewed so I chose this one on the basis of being more off road (rural). Both involve quite long detours making a 10 mile route for towns 6 miles apart. I hope a local can suggest a more direct option! Particularly as this one, while practicable, has a few problems noted below.
I left Tadcaster heading south, but in fact went east for about 3 miles along the River Wharfe. The path is clear enough and attractive, but being May was quite overgrown, which made it tiring. The last section was cropped by a herd of cattle which might intimidate some. At last you turn away from the river, after the railway bridge, to reach Ulleskelf. The path is an indistinct diagonal and in the far corner the gate appears locked but can in fact be unfastened. Here you start back west again - on reaching the sports fields I recommend going along inside to avoid the road. Finally you turn south, but not for long as you soon veer west again. Where you have a choice of two fields, the path actually goes between, through an overgrown and rickety gate which leads to a raised embankment. Finally you reach a quiet lane heading south. The rest of the path is quite clear, passing a golf course, church, care home and a couple of tiny villages. Finally you come into Sherburn but at this point I was not prepared to walk the final detour (no idea why it's there) and simply walked straight to the main road and right to the end point.
In summary the route is possible but it has a few hazards and is I think too long so hopefully a better one can be found.
