Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

12 Aug 2023 Summer

I walked this route from Seaford to Eastbourne on a misty day in August 2023. Although the coastal SEAEAS Three route has already been snailed and is a terrific walk, this inland route is also well worth using. It is more direct, partly through shaded woodland and shared with fewer other walkers. It also passes through the impossibly pretty villages of East and West Dean.

The route out of Seaford is through housing for a mile or so. There is one issue that I noted. It is not possible to get onto the Chyngton Lane bridle path from Steyning Road. This is a cul-de-sac and there is no twitten available between the houses. The options are either to head up to Barcombe Avenue, another cul-de-sac where there is a passage between the houses at the end (which I did), or alternatively follow Chyngton Way right to the end and pick up Chyngton Lane from its start. Other than that I had no issues. The route was easy to follow on the map and on the ground.

It is quite a strenuous walk with ups and downs, though not as hilly as SEAEAS three. There are stiles in places and steps in several locations. Some of the field paths were open and used for grazing sheep. Refreshments were available at Exceat Bridge (the Cuckmere Inn), the Seven Sisters Park Centre and at East Dean village (the Tiger pub).
