Description
Walk from Richmond to Putney (or vice versa), on an alternative to the extremely pleasant, but hilly and unlit, 'Richmond Park' route (Ricput 2), with a number of benefits to offset the loss of the big green space. It's a much flatter route, because it avoids the steep hill at Roehampton, it avoids stairs, and is by-and-large accessible for wheelchair users, with one possible exception where the gap in a barrier is narrow (see photo). Also, it is well lit after dark, although a very short stretch (c 100m) on Barnes Common relies on light from the adjacent road rather than having its own lighting. The route passes directly by Barnes and Mortlake stations. Mostly quiet residential back streets and alleyways, a long stretch along Barnes Common past Barnes Station (well lit footpaths). Several wayside refreshment opportunities, notably at Vine Road recreation ground near Barnes Station, coffee van at Barnes Station, and at the shops and cafes on Sheen Lane, next to Mortlake Station. Richmond and Putney have plentiful cafes and pubs at start/end of route

06 Jul 2021This is a route I made with the objective of providing a pleasant, low traffic, low gradient, fully accessible, fully lit, open all hours route between Richmond and Putney. A massive challenge and it almost ticks all the boxes: there is a frustrating narrow point at St Mary's Grove (between Barnes Common and Putney); and a short length of the path on Barnes Common relies on lighting from the adjacent road rather than its own lights. I don't think it can be improved on without losing its pleasing directness, relatively low 'main road' exposure (for the area), and the connectivity passing next to Barnes and Mortlake stations brings - so I've given it 5 stars.
From Richmond Station walk along the busy main street and head towards East Sheen on the same route as Ricput 2. Back alleys are used to stay away from traffic as much as possible. On approaching East Sheen the route turns onto leafy residential streets with interesting front gardens, and crosses the South Circular at a safe place. Excellent refreshment opportunities around Mortlake Station, then head alongside the railway towards Barnes. There's a bit of a wiggle to cross Beverley Brook, and then the unusual 'double level crossing' at Barnes. Excellent refreshment stop and toilets at Vine Road Recreation Ground (when open) in-between the crossings.
Barnes Common has mostly well-lit paths, pass by Barnes Station (possible coffee stop) and continue on the path alongside the 'up' platform all the way to the main road (B306, Queen's Ride). The path turns left and follows the road for c 100 m., this part is not so well lit, but there is a flight of steps up to Queen's Ride if you prefer, turn left at the top and walk along to rejoin the route.
Cross over Queen's Ride and enter St Mary's Grove - there is a signpost stating 'byway open to all traffic' but unfortunately the exit is rather narrow, I imagine this is to discourage motor traffic, but it may have the added effect of preventing wheelchair access/egress (see photo in route description and this review).
Then a series of leafy quiet residential streets direct to Putney. Cross over the High Street and the station is a few metres up the busy pavement.
