Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

19 Nov 2022A good walk for a dry November day. As mentioned before, some bits are particularly boggy so boots are necessary. As a slight variation, coming from Portishead, I turned off Clapton Drove slightly earlier, up the footpath and through Tynings Wood. When you get to Clevedon Lane you can go straight across and the path loops round to just before the M5 crossing, limiting the walking on roads. Some great views across Portishead from the path.

22 Jan 2022A decent route overall with lots of woodland walking, two slightly damp valley crossings and some up and down hill, offering good views around.
Also though, some niggling, small accuracy issues. As previous reviewers have pointed out, you cannot cross the M5 on the mapped route but need to go a little to the west to use the road under the motorway, and the path down is slightly awry of the route on the OS map - it is a bit confusing if you are walking from the Nailsea direction as I was. Easy the other way though.
Also, on the north side of the section across the Gordano Valley (by How Ham Farm), the access to the road is currently via the farm track and not through the field, as shown on the OS map, as there no access through the hedge at the road end. There is therefore a very short walk along the B-road to/from the path on the north side of it (footway present so safe).
Generally though, there is lots of enjoyable walking. There is the usual mixture of gates, kissing gates, footbridges and the odd stile for access, with some steep gradients and steps. There was standing water in the field in the wettest, rushy field in the valley between Nailsea and Towerhouse Wood today (mid January) but it was ok walking around the drier western margin of the field.
The route through the Gordano valley was fine and not too wet, although the stretch along the bumpy Moor Lane near Clapton in Gordano was a bit dull. It looks a bit more direct to go west a little along the road from the Black Horse pub (seemingly always popular) and use the next footpath along, as it cuts out some of the track, but I didn’t walk it so can’t comment on that route (yet!)
Most of the route was easy to navigate. It is a little fiddly going in/out of Portishead from the open fields but it is a nice villagey route into town.

17 Jun 2021I think that where the route crosses the M5 it is necessary to use the adjacent road bridge under the motorway.

25 Apr 2021Good route using paths to avoid the busy roads out of Nailsea. From Clapton-in-Gordano the route takes you out of your way, over the moors. This makes it interesting but longer. A shorter route would be at this point to follow the road into Portishead. Not accessible for wheelchairs.
