Description
This is a slightly longer alternative to Moulei(1) and Moulei(2). At the Mountsorrel end it follows the Leicestershire Round path along the banks of the River Sour. So, a good option for those wanting to avoid the road sections of the other routes but prepared to take more time

21 Jul 2023A most enjoyable walk but at 10 miles it does lack services. From Leicester it's tarmac cycle track so very easy walking and navigation. The northern section is a country walk which has three stiles, the only ones on the whole route, there could also be cattle in the fields here. Two five star walks but overall four star because of the very different nature of the two sections. This walk shares the southern section with Leisys-2 so worth a look at those reviews.
I walked northwards and having looked at the start of Leisys-2 through more of Abbey Park would take that route next time. Approaching the impressive Space Centre building the path was closed for resurfacing but it was pleasing to see a well signed diversion in place, not a common provision.
The River Soar is also a navigation so there is a towing path alongside but the high quality cycle track surface stays with the river where there are twists and turns that may extend the walk. Entering Watermead Country Park there is a loo block at the car park and as I passed, an ice cream van was available but that's about it.
Again I would suggest looking at Leisys-2 which touches BIrstall where a short detour would offer shops etc. Plus it would avoid the enclosed path around the marina and perhaps offer a better surface along the cycle track.
I noted another loo block towards the northern end of Watermead and then there is a canalside inn before we pass under the A46. The made up cycle track leaves at Meadow Lane to follow the Barkby Brook into Syston perhaps a better approach for Leisys.
Our route continues but now a more typical country path alongside the river. Taking the bridleway to pick up the Leicestershire Round at Cossington would add an inn but no shops, it may also shorten the route a little. Cossington Nature Reserve provides a mown track through the wildlife wilderness.
Sileby Lock offers boats and interest with a double crossing of the river. Approaching Mountsorrel Lock the path is well used by customers of the vast waterside inn which may temp a celebration drink. The narrow road bridge at the lock has no pavement so take care before a short walk along the main street to the meeting place.

24 Nov 2022Lovely route that has mostly good paths along the river and passes by lakes and nature reserve. It's not the most direct route, but it avoids the roads and generally feels quite relaxing. Some nice eating and drinking options in Mountsorrel along the route as well if walk from Leicester to Mountsorrel.

16 Nov 2022A very pleasant route with long sections alongside the river and the canal as well as lakeside walking. An easy-to-follow route, which is well signed and easy walking. Plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting and virtually all traffic free outside the City.
