Description
This alternative route goes to the west of the railway line, passing through the pleasant suburban Heatons. I had planned to use footpaths at Stockport Station and at Heaton Norris, which were both (temporarily, I hope) closed due to works, so the route uploaded is what we actually walked and checked

21 Feb 2023An easy to follow urban route, mostly on pavements with the occasional park. Transport connections and facilities never seem far away.

19 Feb 2023The route left Stockport Station and soon crossed underneath, then alongside the monumental Stockport Viaduct, apparently the largest brick viaduct in the UK with about eleven million bricks, and also past the bus depot. After crossing the River Mersey (which is formed just one kilometre away where the Tame and the Goyt merge), shallow steps led down to an off road cycle track alongside the river. We soon left this via a subway, a footbridge over the M63, and a pedestrian road crossing, then headed uphill into a quieter housing area.
We passed the corner of the lovely James Ainsworth Almshouses and continued along pleasant housing streets through Heaton Norris and Heaton Moor.
A couple of small green spaces and a short muddy path took us to walk along the side of Cringle playing fields and just inside the park, on wide tree-lined avenues.
A couple more residential housing streets took us to Levenshulme Station.

19 Feb 2023Direct and safe with some very pleasant sections. Mainly pavement with the occasional park path. Could be completed in street shoes. Links to public transport and crossings throughout. Very easy to follow.
