Strider
01 Apr 2024I walked from Tolworth to Esher.
A walk of two halves stuck together with mud in the middle.
From Tolworth to close the the A3 apart from a short stroll in a park there are long straight monotonous roads. After 4.5km of uni-directional, hard underfoot walking I was wishing for something different.
Be careful what you wish for.
The approach to and under the A3 was a curving path of soft mud 18cm deep in places with equally deep puddles. I tip-toed along the dryer edges hanging on to thorny hedges for balance. Even the dirt bikes turned back.
The last half was through well-to-do villages and suburbs, many pub gardens full of those out for an Easter pub lunch in the sun. Suburban pavements and lots of high-fenced passages (tunnels) take you to the main road into Esher High Street.
I would not want to do this again, but it is a functional Slow Way and at present the best way to get from A to B.
Not for wheels, mud, narrow uneven paths.

23 Apr 2023I walked this on a cloudy Saturday afternoon, from Esher to Tolworth.
It is fairly urban, with some lovely sections. Unlike Eshewe 1 and 2, this does not go over Telegraph Hill. Which means more residential roads (photo #1) to leave Esher, and fewer nature, but it is more direct and not so hilly. Son there are some public footpath alleyways (photo #2), before passing the Swan Inn (photo #3) in Claygate. Then some more footpaths, with some being a little muddy (photo #4), before going along quiet roads into Claygate proper (photo #5). Going underneath the A3 it was muddy, and the bridleway that followed even more so (photo #6). It didn't help that it was being cut up by dirt bikes. Then a long section along busy roads (photo #7) to pass Chessington North station, before going along a public footpath (photo #8) again. On the other side there was a lovely section through some woods (photo #9), where it then joined the unpleasant Jubilee Way (photo #10). I don't understand why the route didn't continue going north here to go over the nice looking fields between here and Kingston Road, where you could then find the finish just north of the station (photo #11) after having crossed the unpleasantly large road junction..
Due to the large amount of street walk, even when not necessary, I'm making this as a 3 star route.

20 Mar 2022A short section of this route from the A3 to Claygate is shared with Esher - Ewell Eshewe
Some of the bridle path sections were extremely muddy.

06 Jul 2021Good facilities every couple of miles.
Flat and easy to walk
One potential issue: can be very muddy going under the A3
A lot of pleasant off-road and quiet-road sections
There is a busy-road section in Chessington along Bridge Road-Moor Lane.
