Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Jul 2021A well-chosen route that minimises walking through urban areas. The section between Dunstable and its suburb Houghton Regis, over Dog Kennel Down, is a good example. From Houghton Regis the route heads out into open country, following the Chiltern Way for a substantial part of the route with some fine views and passing through the pretty village of Harlington, which has a cafe and two pubs. In Harlington a short detour along Barton Road yields a panoramic view. The route is safe, with only a few yards of walking along a road without a pavement, but some sections, notably from Chalton to Upper Sundon, are not suitable for cycling, with narrow overgrown paths and cramped kissing gates. The final section, from Westoning to Flitwick, takes a substantial dog leg in order to stick to footpaths and is not very interesting. An alternative would be to take Central Bedfordshire footpath FP4 from Harlington to Samshill to join the Slow Ways Flitwick to Luton route into Flitwick. The shortest route from Westoning to Flitwick is along the road; there is pavement all the way.
