Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Apr 2024Not a huge amount of variation in the landscape but a nice gentle stretch of our larger walk.
Be sure to double check the navigation with Thom's previous comments as there is a couple of ways you could walk the wrong field.

31 Mar 2024Walking in rainy weather this had created smaller streams of water in parts of the footpath, making it slightly difficult to follow the route. Despite this, it was still an enjoyable part of our longer trip. We walked through several farms and woodlands. Approaching Diss it was lovely to experience the appearance of the village. Be mindful of the challenging navigation, as referred to by former reviewer Thom Brisco.

29 Mar 2024An enjoyable trail that prioritises the avoidance of roads and hard surfaces over the plot of a fastest route between the two towns. A walk of thatch-roofed houses, farms, fields, and country lanes.
Shortly after walking north out of Yaxley, we faced a navigation challenge by struggling to figure out which side of a ditch/hedgerow to turn west onto, in order to avoid a potential doubling back. I have attached an image with our successful path marked (in red). A slight adjustment of Slow Ways’ recommended route might clarify that walkers should stay south of the tree line.

10 Oct 2022A fair option among the many possible routes between Diss and Eye. There are shorter ways between the towns, but involving more road or grass verge use.
Highlights:
+ Largely avoids walking on roads, includes some lovely tree-lined bridleway, and pleasant footpaths including the valley between Yaxley and Eye.
+ The Cherry Tree pub in Yaxley breaks up the distance.
Negatives:
- Unsuitable for wheelers, most of the route is either restricted for wheels (as public footpath) and includes obstacles, shown in the 4th to 8th photos.
- The A143 crossing chosen is on a fast 60mph stretch, with limited visibility.
- The A140 is also a testing stretch of 50mph road.
- The footpaths between Palgrave and Thrandeston include unkept stretches that often become overgrown with nettles and other tall plants.
- Stiles to cross west of Thrandeston, and west of Eye.
- A minor point, but it's quicker and nicer to use the footpath north of Eye Fire Station, rather than passing Eye Poultry.
