Description
I have redrawn the start and end of the route slightly, hopefully simplifying the Wolverhampton end. Also, at Codsall, I wasn’t convinced it would be possible to walk through OS Grid Ref: SJ 87741 03305 from Orchard Lane to Bilbrook Road

24 Apr 2024 (edited 25 Apr 2024)Walked from Wolverhampton to Codsall. An excellent route. The canal part is very enjoyable and the linking pavement, alleyway and park walks are safe and direct. A deserved snail.
From Wolverhampton stations, we follow the signs out to the canal (rather less complicated than it looks on the map), and follow the canals (Birmingham, Staffs & Worcs & Shropshire Union) to the road into Bilbrook. Where we join the Shropshire Union we use the signposted cycle route through the parks north of the canal rather than the rougher but shorter towpath. Beyond The Droveway we rejoin the towpath at a crossover bridge and from here on it is narrow and unsurfaced. There are steps (avoidable by going slightly further north and doubling back) up to Pendeford Mill Lane, which has a good wide pavement all the way into Bilbrook, where we pass two shops. A mixture of alleyways and back streets takes us to the junction on the edge of Codsall, where there are pelican crossings, and we continue on Wolverhampton Road apart from a pleasant detour through the Wheel Field Park, then go left down Station Road to the station meeting point. The centre of Codsall was full of water engineers doing battle with the mains yesterday, which meant that Station Road was the wettest place on the walk!).

29 Feb 2024A thoroughly relaxing walk. Safe and easy to follow. Pavement, alleyway and towpath. Some steps on the route. Full marks!.

25 Feb 2024The bulk of the route is along the canal towpath, and the routes at either end worked fine. The canal section included three canals and two junctions, despite being only about four miles long. We walked from Codsall to the southern end of the Shropshire Union Canal at Autherley Junction. There we joined the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal for a short distance to Aldersley Junction where we turned off onto the Birmingham Canal.
We passed some interesting bridges, locks and boatyards, and the towpath was nearly all surfaced and in good condition.
An excellent walk despite starting off in the rain.
