19 Sep 2023The route starts at Worsthorne and for just over half a mile it is on the quiet B road south of Worsthorne. At that point it goes into fields slightly rising until reaching another B road, crossing this with new housing on the right hand side of the path. Passing Cliviger Laithe on the right, the path bears left through new gates uphill to the top of Higher Cliviger. (Not far or steep). Here there are stunning views of the Burnley District looking North, with Townley Hall below, nestling in amongst woodland and looking south towards the cliffs that rundown towards Todmorden. (Orientation is estimated)
The walk takes you past the interesting Elizabethan (the first!) Barcroft Hall to Cliviger. A history description board is situated along Park Lane. The walk ends at the top of the lane.

14 Sep 2023We left Worsthorne village centre down a fairly quiet road that mostly had a narrow pavement along one side. There was a bench tucked in next to Salterford Bridge, and soon after this we found the short footpath through the woods and into the fields. There were kissing gates at either end. This field was straightforward to cross, although the path was not well worn, and there were a couple of sleepy cows some distance away.
There were stiles either side of the road crossing, and then new housing had changed the nature of the next footpath, but it was still quite possible.
The field south of Cliviger Laithe was the highlight for me. We sat down on the slope here for some packed lunch, and to admire the superb views in all directions. I spotted Towneley Hall, Burnley, Pendle Hill, the Calder valley towards Todmorden, and even the Singing Ringing Tree on the horizon above Cliviger.
We then walked down through the field (the ground was briefly a bit rough in one place) to pass the lovely Barcroft Hall. We stuck to the obvious lane and public footpath there, rather than the brief corner-cutting of the plot, which I suspect was a mistake. In Cliviger we stopped to read an information board, and a local had a chat with us about the history of the area, which was interesting.
I really enjoyed this route, and if you’re a stile and kissing gate fan, there is a lovely varied selection for you!.
