Description
Sorry this is along the road but there is a pavement and in places it's segregated from the traffic by a strip of grass. Direct and through residential area so potential to attract users. It passes the church which stands on high ground and is a landmark for the area. I walked routes 1 and 2 without being impressed so hope this acheives Slow Way goals

12 Mar 2023 (edited 13 Mar 2023)Walked from North WIngfield to Clay Cross. A simple direct route, but not very exciting.
Leaving The Green at North Wingfield, we follow a series of quiet residential streets and surfaced alleyways to reach Station Road, which we cross and go right a short distance then straight on into a car park. We take the path left past the pub and into the churchyard.
As Ken says, the footpath line left of the church is still closed for safety reasons, so I followed the steps down through the churchyard then continued on a well trodden unsurfaced path that leads to the church gate. We then cross the main road and follow its pavement over the railway and river Rother and up the hill, staying on Market Street where the main road turns right. We cross to the right/north side of the road by the bus stops to reach the meeting point a little further on.

19 Nov 2022Ken's review is exactly right - I choose it because it is short and direct and safe and accessible . Clay Cross has a great bus station with nice clean toilets and buses from everywhere with friendly drivers. It has all the facilities anyone could need from cafes to hairdressers.
The road towards North Wingfield is very busy and noisy with cars but has a decent pavement all the way to the church - I imagined great views through a misty drizzle and enjoyed the quiet wander through suburbia to the finish point where there is a post office and Spar. Next time I'll probably just jump on a bus but glad I did it.

25 Feb 2022This route meets some Slow Ways requirements but fails on one. It's direct, good surface pavements and paths and mostly lit but it's noisy with traffic on the shared road section. The pavements are generally good but the section around the rail bridge is narrow. The path up to the church is steps and there is no link between pavement and path here so it's a scramble up a grassy bank. The church footpath was closed on my visit, looks long term due to an unsafe wall but it possible to get around it through the churchyard. Footpaths link quiet estate roads. Great views from the church and the Blue Bell Inn alongside but stay on the road if the steps are an issue.
